Entry level attorney. Comparable to "junior associate" in a private sector law firm (zero to three years experience). Responsible for litigating own case load. Works with more senior attorneys in the defense of personal injury lawsuits filed against the CTA, from minor to catastrophic injuries. Works on subrogation and property damage defense.
Primary duties and Responsibilities Handles own docket of personal injury cases. Duties Include: frequent appearances before courts, jury and bench trials, hearings and arbitrations, the taking and defending of depositions, other discovery, preparation of witnesses, research, drafting of pleadings, and motions. Primarily a high-volume practice. Works with more senior attorneys in a second chair capacity on large personal injury litigation. Plays an integral role in these assignments, typically examining witnesses, arguing motions, drafting memoranda, briefs and settlement agreements. Conducts research for the purpose of advising client departments. May provide advice and counsel directly to clients. Manages work of paralegals and other support staff assigned to his/her projects. Builds skills through continuing legal education programs (e.g., National Institute of Trial Advocacy program) and training opportunities offered by Law Department. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
Law degree from an accredited school of law. Licensed, or in the process of obtaining a license, to practice law in Illinois. 0 - 3 years experience. Must possess integrity, initiative and the creativity to provide effective solutions to CTA issues. Must be capable of leadership and teamwork. Must possess suitable temperament and disposition, and strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interrelate with personnel from assigned units and various levels of personnel from other Authority departments.
Must communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and possess analytical skills necessary for competent legal interpretation. Must be knowledgeable of applicable federal and state laws. Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including word processing functions.

Responsible for the administration of the CTA's labor agreements including contract interpretation, and disciplinary matters. Education and Experience Requirements

Masters Industrial Relations, paralegal certification or law degree preferred and/or combination of 3-5 years Employee/Labor Relations, Human Resources work experience. Experience in contract negotiation, interpretation and administration of labor relations policy and contracts. Skills necessary to research, analyze, and provide oral and/or written guidance quickly and accurately regarding contract interpretation and must be able to make decisions under pressure. Thorough knowledge of labor relations theory, policy and procedures, including the practice of negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Must be thoroughly familiar with employee disciplinary and grievance procedures and CTA union rules and regulations pertaining to employee conduct. Required to be familiar with terminal, garage and shop operations, and the types of work performed at these locations. Skills and disposition necessary to present, discuss and defend the CTA's position on labor matters with union officials, attorneys, consultants and management. Suitable temperament and disposition necessary for maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of CTA personnel and outside contacts. Must write and express one's self in a clear, logical and comprehensible manner. Must possess working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including word processing functions required to maintain electronic records of caseloads.
